Once it is active, the peroxide releases reactive oxygen species that attack the pigmented molecules, called chromogens, trapped inside enamel and dentin. Those molecules absorb light and make a tooth look darker or more yellow. Peroxide breaks the chemical bonds that give them their colour, so they reflect light differently and the tooth looks lighter. This is a chemical change to the stain, not a scrubbing of the outer surface.
1. Bleaching is chemistry, not polishing. This is the key distinction that gets blurred in marketing. A great deal of what is sold as whitening does not bleach at all. Matching the method to your mouth
Beyond gentleness, the honest question is whether a given method can even do what you want, because the type of discoloration you have determines what will respond.
